Humanitarian Projects - Casa Linda Lodge Christmas Project & Phoenix Children's Hospital Project

Casa Linda Lodge Christmas Project
The Happy Valley building is adopting two mothers and three children through Casa Linda Lodge this Christmas. Casa Linda Lodge is a group home for pregnant and parenting teenage mothers. It is run through Catholic Charities of Phoenix. A Christmas tree with the needed items is available at the Happy Valley church building. The tree will have tags for each item listed below for each individual we are adopting.

All items need to be NEW and UNWRAPPED and turned in by Sunday, December 5, 2010.

Tin Tin (mother of Tracy)
Tin Tin's dream gift this Christmas is a DVD player. Sher is 18 years old, shoe size 4 1/2, pant size 1, shirt size small, and her favorite color is blue. She would love earrings, socks, gloves, hair straightener, a black purse and a CD/alarm clock for Christmas. She is planning ahead and would enjoy a vaccuum, dishes, pots and pans, and a blue queen size bed set.

Tracy
Tracy is 19 months old, wears a 2T in Clothing and is a size 4 in diapers. For Christmas she wants a baby doll, earrings, pillow pet and a high chair. She would love gift cards from Wal-Mart, Ross or DD's. Her dream gift would be a toddler bed for Christmas.

Layla (mother of Khalid)
Layla's dream gift this Christmas would be a digital camera. Layla is 18 years old with a shoe size of 7, pant size of 9 and shirt size large. Her favorite colors are white and/or blue. For Christmas, her wish list is earrings, necklace, gift card for bras, yoga pants, stereo, pillow pet and a black purse. She is also planning ahead and would like a large suitcase and queen bed set.

Khalid
Khalid is 2 years old, wears a 4T in clothing and 2T in underwear. His favorite color is blue. He wants bath toys, a bat and ball, Spiderman back pack, Spiderman T-shirt, and a Leap Frog magnetic toy. He would love gift cards for clothes. His dream gift is a V-Smile console.

Stephanie (mother of Michael)
Stephanie has graduated from the Casa Linda house and is just looking for some help with her son Michael this Christmas. She is part of the Casa Linda Lodge's independent program.

Michael
Michael is 4 years old, wears 5T in clothing and his favorite color is blue. He loves books, toy card, DVD's, Toy Story toys, Fisher Price Cool School, Leap Frog Toys and a Toy Story Bike. He would love gift cards from Wal-Mart and Kids Foot Locker. Dream gift: Toy Story table.

All items need to be NEW and UNWRAPPED and turned in by Sunday, December 5, 2010.

If you have questions, contact a member of the Pinnacle Vista Relief Society Presidency or Audtra Nuttall (Humanitarian Specialist) in the North Canyon Ward.

Phoenix Children's Hospital Project - "Carter Cares"
Julianne King has found a way to give back to this wonderful hospital. We are helping to make 27 bags (the number of baby beds in the NICU) filled with items like blankets, snacks, toothbrushes, and hairbrushes for parents who, like Julianne, find themselves unexpectedly spending time at the hospital with a sick or injured baby.

Super Saturday- Cheryl Weathersby's Cranberry-Habanera Jelly Recipe

Cranberry-Habanera Jelly is a unique, easy and fun to make recipe. It will make your mouth water, your ears pop and your body temperature rise. This recipe is sure to please friends and family when you serve it at your next party or gathering.
Ingredients
Although a bit of effort to prepare, this sweet and hot jelly goes well poured over a brick of cream cheese or just atop some crackers. It is also good when melted and used as a glaze for chicken or pork. Use caution to avoid breathing the vapors while processing or cooking the chiles. Be sure to wear food-safe gloves when handling habanera peppers and wash hands, knives, and cutting boards thoroughly, first in cold water and soap and then again with hot water and soap. Do not touch eyes, nose, mouth, or other sensitive body parts when handling the chiles.

17 to 20 habanera peppers (about 1 cup diced)
1 1/2 to 2 large red bell peppers (about 2 cups diced)
1 1/2 cups white vinegar
1/2 cup whole cranberries, fresh or frozen
1/2 cup dried, sweetened cranberries (Craisins)
7 cups granulated sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
3 ounces liquid fruit pectin (1 pouch Certo)

Wearing food-safe gloves, stem, seed, and dice habanera peppers. Seed and dice the bell peppers. Process peppers in a food processor or blender until minced. Add the vinegar and continue processing until smooth. Heat a 6 1/2-quart stockpot over medium-high heat. Add the pepper slurry, and the whole and dried cranberries. Cook, simmering and stirring often, until the whole cranberries burst, about 6 to 8 minutes. (Do not breathe the vapors!) Remove from heat. Use an immersion blender or food processor and puree until smooth.
Return stockpot to heat, add sugar and cook, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved. Add the lemon juice. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes. Increase heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a rolling boil, add the pectin, and, while stirring constantly, cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, ladle into sterilized containers, and process containers in a hot water bath for 10 minutes.
Yield: Makes 6 to 7 (8-ounce) jars

Pies for Good Causes!

The Cub Scouts are taking orders until November 16th for pies for your Thanksgiving Dinner!
The Pie flavors?... DELICIOUS!...

1. Chocolate Cream
2. Pumpkin Cream
3. Coconut Cream
4. Banana Cream

Contact any cub scout (or their moms) to make an order. They are trying to get each cub scout to sell at least five pies. The pies are selling for $10 each. The money will go toward their summer cub scout camps and pine wood derby costs. The pies will go toward the smile on your face and the good feeling in your mouth and tummy after Thanksgiving dinner!
The cub scouts will hand deliver them to you the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving.
**************************************
Want to make the pie you buy from the cub scouts a gift that keeps on giving?... we are donating pies as a Stake Relief Society to the nearby youth Correctional Facility (a yearly Stake tradition). They are in need of 300 pies this year. Make (or buy one of these beauties) and deliver them to the Happy Valley Building all day on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. You could always slave in the kitchen to donate to the Correctional Facility and then donate again by rewarding your hard work with a pie as sweet as a cub scout!

For information about the pie sale for cub scouts contact Shirley Jorgensen.

For information about the donation of pies for the correctional facility, contact a member of the RS presidency.
